Most significant move: Putting Pernell McPhee on the physically unable to perform list.
Most surprising move: Waiving veteran receiver Marc Mariani.
Rookie class: Seventh-round pick Daniel Braverman had several positive moments on the practice field, but he looked indecisive on special teams. The third phase is what often determines the bottom of the 53-man roster, and Braverman never thrived as a return man. Braverman appears destined for the practice squad, if he clears waivers. The same holds true for undrafted Harvard tight end Ben Braunecker. Fourth-round pick Nick Kwiatkoski played well in his only preseason action against the Browns, and stuck on the 53, despite sitting much of camp because of a strained hamstring.
DJ Khaled: The Bears' decision to release veteran center Khaled Holmes is a vote of confidence for Cornelius Edison, who spent a chunk of the preseason working with the starters.
Bears moves: Receiver B.J. Daniels, cornerback Kevin Peterson, offensive lineman Khaled Holmes, offensive lineman Garry Williams, defensive linemanTerry Williams, offensive lineman Shelley Smith, linebacker Danny Mason(waived injured), receiver Daniel Braverman, long snapper Patrick Scales, offensive lineman Jason Weaver, tight end Tony Moeaki, receiver Marc Mariani, running back Jacquizz Rodgers, linebacker John Timu, tight end Ben Braunecker, cornerback DeVante Bausby, tight end Rob Housler, quarterbackDavid Fales, DL Ego Ferguson (waived/injured), cornerback Taveze Calhoun, Pernell McPhee (PUP) and Marquess Wilson (PUP).
Timu was beat out by Kwiatkoski who put together 4 days of practice and a few quarters of PS4. Timu got gamed by the ole nepotism play right there. Bad move IMO. I would definitely have flipped those two's futures and put Kwiat. on the practice squad and Timu on the active roster.
I'd say that move was the biggest shocker to me (even more than Mariani whose contributions on STeams are limited) and, with Trevathan's knee issues (historic and present) that could be a move that bites us in the ass this year. Kwiat (I would imagine) is nowhere near ready to see the regular season field and will be a huge liability if he's out there.

Releasing Mariani was the shocker to me. I'm hoping they might bring him back after week one when they don't have to guarantee his salary for the year. I'm still wary about Royal making it through 16 games.
As for Timu and Kwiatkoski they probably felt it would be easier to get Timu through waivers plus teams tend to keep draft picks over UDFA types. Timu made it to the PS so he'll still be available and of the two Kwiatkoski has more upside and from what I can tell has more speed and range as well.
I think they kept Anderson more as the backup to Trevathan and Kwiatkoski as the backup to Freeman.
