Over the past two seasons, Bryan Stork started 17 games at center for the New England Patriots. On Wednesday, he will find himself without a job.
In a bit of a surprise move, the Patriots are cutting their 2014 fourth-round draft pick, according to NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport. Stork, who was in the process of losing the starting job to 2015 undrafted free agent David Andrews, also got himself booted from a joint practice with the Chicago Bears last week for mixing it up with Bears linebacker Sam Acho.
The Patriots have also thinned out their receiving corps. Rapoport added that New England is cutting veteran wide receiver Nate Washington on Wednesday.
As the Boston Herald noted a week ago, Stork has had some problems controlling his emotion. There was the headbutt in the AFC title game last season, and he also was tossed from a minicamp practice in June for fighting.
Stork's name was batted around in low-level trade rumors throughout the offseason, but it seems like Patriots coach Bill Belichick couldn't find anything worth his time. Unlike many coaches, Belichick doesn't wait around for draft picks to become the players he expected them to be. There is no doubt the 25-year-old Stork will get some auditions around the league over the coming weeks if he clears waivers given the rash of injuries at the position.
Despite some concerns across New England's starting offensive line, whatever bothered Belichick about Stork was serious enough to merit the ultimate punishment.
As NFL Media's Mike Garafolo noted recently, the Chicago Bears have been exploring potential trades for a center. After Hroniss Grasu injured his ACL, the team installed Ted Larsen in his place but have their eyes out for a potential challenger.
