Four players who stood out in the Bears' preseason loss to the Chiefs

It seemed like just about everything went wrong for the Chicago Bears in their preseason loss to the Kansas City Chiefs Saturday, as their offense struggled to move the ball, their defense struggled to make stops, and injuries continued to pile up.
There were some bright spots though. A few players stood out and showed a lot to like while their teammates struggled around them, giving Bears fans at least something positive to draw from this game.
Connor Shaw
It took a Brian Hoyer injury to get him into the game, but when Shaw starting running the offense, things really started to pick up. The South Carolina product was 5-of-6 for for 68 yards and the team’s only touchdown, until Chiefs defensive lineman Rakeem Nunez-Roches landed on Shaw’s ankle, and he was carted off the field.
The young quarterback had a clear connection with wide receivers Cameron Meredith and Josh Bellamy, moving the offense down the field better than anyone else on the day. Shaw’s injury appeared to be devastating, but for a few drives in the second half, he shined and gave the Bears hope at backup quarterback.
Charles Leno
The Bears’ offensive line was atrocious for most of this game, but the one starter up front who had a good game was Leno. He held down the blindside in pass protection well, only beaten once on the outside by Chiefs linebacker Frank Zombo, and he did a decent job as a run blocker with the exception of one bad block on the second play of the game.
With Kyle Long still out, it appears Leno is the Bears’ best offensive lineman at the moment. Cody Whitehair is steadily improving but still making rookie mistakes, similar to Cornelius Edison in his first starting action, while Ted Larsen and Bobby Massie have really struggled in their first preseason with the team.
Jacoby Glenn
Glenn got the start once again with Kyle Fuller out, and he had a pretty good game for a 2015 undrafted free agent. Outside of a missed tackle on the third play of the game, he was reliable in coverage, mirroring receivers closely and working back to the ball to prevent receptions.
Glenn’s biggest play came on third down early in the second quarter, matched up one-on-one with Chiefs receiver Chris Conley. The young cornerback showed some veteran savvy by grabbing onto the receiver’s jersey just a little bit, enough to help him but not enough to draw the flag, allow him to come back and swat the ball away.
Jerrell Freeman
One free agent addition who has not disappointed is Freeman, who had another big day with five tackles and a pass breakup against Chiefs wide receiver Albert Wilson. The veteran linebacker did get beat once against Travis Kelce, but he was otherwise solid in coverage and even better against the run.
Two of his tackles were run stops for two or fewer yards as he was adept at finding the lane, filling it and attacking the running back who was trying to enter it. The Bears’ defense struggled to stop the Kansas City offense, but Freeman was doing everything he could to try and make some plays to get his unit off of the field.
