I don't really think his friendship with Flus is the reason why he still has a job. At the end of the day they all answer to the owner. If Flus is still employed on Black Monday...then I'll rethink my current opinion.
Others say the George and Teddy don't intervene in these decisions. So which is it?
I don't know anyone who owns anything that wouldn't intervene or have a say in something that involves their money...do you?
You really don't? I have to admit, that is my take and has been since he kept him.
I don't really see how it could be a take. Whether people want to admit it or not Flus showed some things both in the tear down season and last year that would give you reason to keep him around another year with an improved roster. Further...as Dick Butkus said, this family has always "thrown around nickles like they were manhole covers"...you think they were willing to eat 3 years of salary? I CERTAINLY don't.
Honestly, I’m not impressed with Flus. I think that quote was from Halas. I guess the same love of nickels could have been passed on through the generations, but not for sure. But sometimes corporations have to make expenditures that are required for the enterprise to prosper. Even if those costs are not palatable. I think eating those sunk costs fall into that category. The real question is whether or not they will appreciate that fact

The McCaskeys and Jerry Reinsdorf have one thing in common: They are content with things going as they are; they're not trying to rock the boat for any reason.

I don't disagree with you in regards to your last paragraph...but this family has never shown that they are willing to eat large chunks of money. They've also never let go of a coach or OC in the middle of a season due to performance...so we kind of saw something new yesterday. I don't think George felt comfortable jumping all the way into new waters though.

Hopefully some of that was Warren, which would mean maybe more openness to new viewpoints. God knows the ones they have held since Halas left have not been productive. Without being at a high level in the organization, it is impossible to tell who is driving what.

+1 We really don't know. Regarding having to pay a heavy financial penalty for a bad coach hire (firing Flus and eating his salary) may be a good lesson that needs to be learned by the McCaskey family. Just hiring a good old boy Mr Rogers guy, rather than hiring the BEST guy - can impact their bank account. With the escalating costs to run an NFL franchise now (pretty darned big-ticket stuff now) a HC miss can be a pretty big deal financially for an owner that doesn't have the deep pockets of some of these owners who have better cash-flow.

I don't doubt you are correct and that's what I mean by "meddling".
Obviously, the guy writing the checks (George & fam) always has the final say. But the McCaskeys aren't football execs and it plainly shows. What's the point of hiring Warren or a GM if you are not gonna let them take decisive action when needed? Especially action that is "painful" like eating sunk cost salaries and shaking things up in-season?
Ownership seem to put a lot of stock in their "traditions" and way of doing things. That would be a lot easier to stomach if those things had brought past success. They haven't. The "Bears way" has resulted in, let's face it, a bottom-5 NFL franchise over the last 20 years or so.
With Detroit finally righting the ship, lets be honest here, the Bears organization is now swimming with the dregs of the NFL--franchises like the Jets, Browns, Jags, and Panthers. We are bottom-feeders.

Exactly. It is a bad franchise. I think some Bears fans fail to grasp how bad this franchise is - and has been for decades. It really is a laughing stock of the NFL (one of the major clown shows anyway). LOL, you see it in the prime time games where the people covering those games (including past players who played the game at a high level) seem to barely contain their contempt for the team. It's like "Bears are gonna crap the bed" and often (way too often) the Bears totally crap the bed in front of a national prime time audience. This stink is generational, not just on Poles' watch here.
I am going to personally be so pissed if the Chicago Bears fail to develop Caleb Williams. I can't change the franchise but I sure can pick another team to follow as my fav NFL team. I probably should have done this decades ago but like all the other meatballs I keep hoping the blind squirrel will finally find an acorn. These Bears wouldn't know what to do if they ever found an acorn anyway. Caleb Williams is exhibit one.

I've already turned the page to follow my #2 team for the rest of the year -- the Cards. They seem to found a good young HC and he has Murray playing his best ball in years.
Wow....so it can actually be done. Just not in Chicago.
