Okay so being a guy that wasn't a big fan of Peppers, I thought this was very insightful. We often talk about players athletic ability and/or football ability and football IQ. Sometimes we talk about how they fit into schemes, man vs zone 3-4 4-3, or if they would be a better fit at a different posititon. But rarely do we look into or talk about what they are being asked to do w/in that system/scheme.
Peppers was basically asked to shut down the outside run on his side and play/or play zone coverage in the pass, he was essentially Hunter Hillenmeyer for the Wolverines, get everything funneled back into the DL and other LB's.
I think we could all learn something from this; not all positions and schemes ask players to do general or generic skills all the time. Forte is a perfect examples of this. He wasn't asked to get traditional RB yards and was often neg'd for it; but yards are yards and other teams have caught up quickly, many rb's are now at least competent at catching the ball out of the backfield. The NO's, and now Bears OT's are also a good reminder of this. They aren't being asked to be stalwarts on the outside; they are asked to keep the DE's on the outside and push them behind the QB allowing a clean pocket to step into. The OG's and OC are the ones asked to be stalwarts.
