So here's the link: bleacherreport.com/articles/2761945-dave-gettleman-says-giants-are-open-to-trading-no-2-pick-in-2018-nfl-draft
Basically, I needed a space to rant about the draft and this was my jump off point.
So, who cares about NYG talking about trading back? Obviously, they want to say their open for business, what team isn't? Has Dorsey said the number 1 pick is for sale? It probably is, for the right deal... like every pick.
Let's talk trade scenarios, will a team trade up for a nonQB? All the talk in this draft is about QBs, and rightly so as the most importantly position and 4 1st round graded players at the position. I'm not even going to speculate this type of trade bc it feels unpredictable.
Trading for a QB is more predictable bc you know what teams need one: Cleveland, maybe NYG, Denver, NYJ, Dolphins, MAYBE Cincinnati, Cardinals, and Buffalo. I'm purposefully leaving out NOLA, Pitt, Minn, and NE bc those situations are separate from the others.
Here's where things get fun, and exactly why people shouldn't be trying to predict a trade up yet, free agency. You have the Captain of the crew, Kirk Cousins. He's the game changer of this draft. There is the forgotten man, AJ McCarron. Will teams view him as a stop gap or a real solution to build around? Then there are a litany of other guys lead by the Vikings trio. At least one of those guys will be back in Minnesota.
If Kirk Cousins goes to Cleveland, the whole draft becomes way, WAY more interesting. That will mean 2 of the 4 top picks will be owned by a team with a QB, QB will not be picked by the Browns in the first now. If it's not obvious why, well, where do I start? I'm not going to because you should able to name one. From here, can Cleveland trade out of pick 1? Giants want out of pick 2 so NY won't jump up one spot, ha, why would any team do that? Haha. Indy has a QB, will probably be pissed with the likelihood the one player they really wanted is now gone and will let the board fall to them with the perfect spot they are still in. .... Do you see what I'm getting at yet?
Next up are the top QB needy teams: Denver and NYJ. These are two teams in the running for Cousins. If they miss out they are likely battling each other for the QB Cleveland doesn't take (that could be the top QB or second best). Yes, my whole premise is built around NYG not taking a QB. If they are, well, what teams are jumping up? As I mentioned, 4 QBs have 1st round grades, there will be a QB to be had at 5 and 6, if they need one.
You're probably thinking, "Umm, teams other than Cleveland, Denver, and NYJ need a QB, they could trade up." To that I ask, how far is Cleveland, NYG, and maybe Indy willing to move down? Will they want to fall down to 11 or 15? Do Miami and Arizona have the ball and firepower to go up that high? I doubt it. The only team that might be appealing is Buffalo, but will 21 and 22 be more appealing than the players in the top 5/10 in the draft?
As a Bears fan, obviously the more QBs in the top 7, the better. But is it really? Who is in the running for Kirk Cousins that isn't in the top 7? That's right Minnesota, we don't want that to happen. Buffalo signed Tyrod, they know Kirk isn't going there. Arizona? Maybe, that the best case for Chicago fans. I guess Miami is a dark horse. Am I forgetting anyone?
I just don't see a top 5 trade happening. Now if there is a strange scenario where the Browns go all in on McCarron and don't draft a QB, Denver gets Cousins, it'll be down for the NYs to pick a QB. If the Giants are set, the Jets are drafting their favorite QB. Arizona might be calling to move ahead of Miami at that point.
Now let's look the other way.. Cleveland drafts a QB and the Giants draft a QB, is there a QB Denver wants to draft still there? Same with the Jets. One way or the other, a QB will be falling draft day. Who knows how far.
Tl;dr Let's not go on rants QBs and speculate trade scenarios until after the combine and, mainly, free agency to see where Kirk ends up. It just makes you look crazy.
