Bears have played young DB's due to injuries and no talent

Well another article summing up Pace's focus on young talent but good point about having to rotate players especially in the secondary because no one is sticking due to talent.

Bryce Callahan has returned from a concussion and could be in the mix with Jacoby Glenn for the starting cornerback spot opposite Porter. Both are second-year pros signed as undrafted free agents last season. Coach John Fox has drawn parallels between Callahan and Broncos cornerback Chris Harris, who went from undrafted rookie to star.

Fangio said Glenn has played the deep ball well and improved his tackling, but they want to see him become better in tight coverage near the line of scrimmage. Fourth-round pick Deiondre' Hall played sparingly in the first two games before playing on special teams last week and should get an opportunity at some point this season. Fangio wouldn't cite a reason for Hall not playing on defense last week, but it's clear he's working to earn the coaches' trust in practice.



Then there is Cre'Von LeBlanc, an undrafted rookie claimed off waivers from the Patriots at final cuts. LeBlanc played nickel back Sunday against the Cowboys and has had sticky hands in practice. With the Bears struggling to generate takeaways, it might make sense to throw him out there again and see if he can make some plays. They have to find some playmakers.

Fortunately for the Bears, defensive backs coach Ed Donatell is one of the better teachers on Fox's staff. He has experience as a defensive coordinator, so he understands how the system fits as a whole. Fangio lauded him for the work he does in the classroom.

I don't know how much blame I can put on the DBs when you have guys like Floyd getting man handled by NFL tackles.

Yeah it has but despite that the rookies and a second year guy like Glenn have held up reasonably well and made some plays.  Even Porter has played well for the most part.

We need takeaways but it's hard to see that happening until he do get better results from the pass rush.  Few QBs, even younger ones if well coached, will make the mistakes that lead to picks when they aren't under pressure and the best will destroy those guys.  We just haven't faced one of them yet.

If our DL and OLBs were playing half as well as our young CBs we'd be much stronger on defense.

i agree that Glenn has looked good. Porter hasn't been on the field much. that's my hope for the season: DC finds a way to generate pressure. if that happens we could win some games thanks to turnovers.

so far it hasn't been exactly a great in terms of design or execution.

I like the youth approach at DB. They seem to be actively developing and letting play and competition decide vs name and pay.
I don't care how sticky some dudes hands are. If no one is forcing the QB in to making rushed throws and poor decision, interceptions will not happen. Untill a pass rush develops DBs will get exposed after 5 seconds.

Porter has started and is usually been covering the others guys #1 like Peanut did.  Did you mean Hall or Leblanc or Callahan?  They've been the main subs or nickel guys?

I do too.  Glenn was one of those PS guys from 2015 I'd hope would step up this year.

He had a rep for tight coverage in college and had he stayed at UCF and gained more weight he might have been at least a mid round or higher pick as a senior but at 170lbs no one would draft him.  He's up to 185lbs now and at least able to compete at this level.

Now if the Bears training staff can figure out how to put another 15-20lbs on a much taller Leonard Floyd maybe we'll have something with him too but not playing at his current weight.

Well this would say he has played all three games tragic but I can't really recall.

The Bears have started the same base four defensive backs in all three games — Porter and Jacoby Glenn at the corners, Adrian Amos and Harold Jones-Quartey at the safeties —


Not being thrown at is a good thing I think.  Although it would make more sense to pick on Glenn, if Porter has the other guys number one WR every play that can only help us.
