Kruetz was talking about Benson last week in pre game, said that he and TJ were a great combo set of RB's, and both should have tried to make it work. He said that Benson absolutely abused Def's and wore them out helping TJ do what he did for the team.
I also agree that, if he didn't want to be here and was refusing to contract terms before the draft they should have looked elsewhere. But the reality is that everyone they would have picked would have sucked b/c the entire top of the draft that year sucked.
We had Thomas Jones who was good and highly regarded in the locker room. Cedric "the bust" Benson can in like a Douche bag. Refused to be apart of the team, and acted like royalty. I remember several confrontation stories about the locker room vs Benson. After being kick to the curb and on the street for a while Cincinnati gave him a chance and he played well for 3 years. He also probably had a attitude realignment in his football hiatus. Horrible selection.
Nah, that was due to the fact that Cincy actually prides itself on it's douche bags. They have an entire roster full of them so he fit right in there.
I agree with Brasil on this one...if the guy wouldn't agree to the contract you tried to offer him prior to drafting him...why would you draft him and think he'd agree to that contract?! You were basically asking him to hold out. Further...I remember everyone getting all pissy about Bennett slamming Fuller to the ground last year but nobody remembers the cheap shots the defense took on Benson? Benson wasn't great here...but we didn't do him any favors. The Bears should have passed on him and everyone would have been happy.
Of course they should have but as a rookie coming to a team with an established, successful, and well liked RB Benson didn't do himself any favors holding out then finally showing up with an attitude.
JA was an idiot. We all know that but that's the business side of rookie negotiations they all went through then. Benson wasn't the only one to get that kind of an "agree to this and we'll draft you" deal.
Quite a few teams did that when they had a top ten pick because those guys were asking for boodles more than players drafted out of the top ten. That was when agents like Rosensleaze were in their prime remember? How often do you hear about him now that he can't get any press from conducting high profile hold outs. Nothing right?
Urlacher pretty much owned that team by then and I'm sure all of that didn't go down well with him or a few other guys on that D. Benson was a rookie and he got reminded of it sometimes just in case he forgot it.

The second paragraph I agree with you about but the first???
How much abuse did Ced hand out in that SB game. Bob Sanders came up and laid a little abuse of his own on Benson one time and that was it for him for the rest of the game. Benson had all kinds of potential but never even came close to reaching it as a Bears RB even after TJ was traded.
He had his shot and he blew it so I have no sympathy for his emotions now. Maybe if he'd had matured a bit and had that attitude back then things may have turned out differently.

I didn't know there was 1 game played that season, did the Bears magically get to play in the SB?

I remember watching a mock draft show about 3 days b4 the draft . They were doing the usual - analyzing who will draft who where . When they came to the Bears the host said to the draft guru ( can't remember his name ) " we hear rumors the Bears might take Cedric Benson here ... what do you think ? " and the guru is shaking his head & said something like " yeah , maybe ... if he doesn't wind up on the police blotter first " . I thought , gimme a break , what an over the top comment ( I wanted the Bears to draft him cuz he was so good in college - and they did , and I was happy ) ... and though it didn't happen right away , it turns out he was right . There were flashes where you thought " he's going to be good " , but most of the time he was a dud .
We've had more than our share of duds , for far too long . We're due for some 'homeruns' .
It wasn't Benson's fault he should never have been drafted for the Bears at the time. JA the epitome of idiot GM.
What wasn't Benson's fault? That the Bears drafted him? Ok, that I can agree with.
That he wasn't mature enough to handle the NFL and possibly being a second banana to TJ for a few years? That I won't agree with. It wasn't until after his second DUI the Bears released him. Then it was up to the team as far as what to do about that stuff. Now the NFL will suspend you for it. He was 25 years old when that shit happened and far from being a kid just out of college. Hell he was already 23 when he arrived with the Bears.
