Sure JA was an idiot and his game playing with the contract just made it tougher on Benson to be accepted but if the opinion from a good friend shark posted which was based on some personal knowledge of the guy doesn't seem to fit the picture you have of him well then we see him much differently.
I didn't say he never had talent. What I implied is that he was an immature man child at age 23 and not any better at age 25 when the Bears finally released him despite that talent. He didn't fit and never even tried to IMHO.
One of my best friends was born and raised in Dallas so he always has the 411 on players out of Texas. I remember him telling me when he was drafted by the Bears that he would never fit in, that he lacked maturity and was a prima donna coming from a Texas program that coddled him (sounds like a more recent first rd Longhorn). I do remember seeing the talent in the Olin quote mentioned above. My buddy proved to be pretty spot about Benson as he folded like a lawn chair when he had to deal with adversity for the first time in his adult life.
Despite all that you say butkus if you think any Bears fan, except maybe you, has a soft spot in their heart for Cedric Benson I think you'd be in a very small minority. From my perspective his career as a pro was much less impressive than it might have been.
I agree with your post. This is old news and it comes off as a player trying to justify his shitty play with a team while also trying to regain some of the spotlight.
I suppose the one caveat is this serves as a bit of a warning to Ryan Pace: make sure you're selecting a player who's skilled AND excited to play ball for Chicago.

I never said I had a soft spot for him...perhaps you missed it when I said the Bears never should have taken him and everyone would have been happy? I didn't like the pick at the time because I liked Thomas Jones and I thought we should have addressed other areas, but I'll be damned if I don't call it how I see it. How I see it is nobody did anybody any favors and everyone shares a piece of the blame as to why that move didn't work out.

That's fair. I thought I communicated that as well when I said JA was an idiot to draft him when he had TJ already and anyone might have figured taking Benson #4 overall would create a RB controversy we didn't need. The whole deal was a mess from start to finish.
